As fire rained from the heavens up high
And purple bolts streaked the sky
People below scream in fear
While their houses ablaze, burn, and sear
With each wingbeat, destruction follows
With each footstep the ground itself hollows
A beast of fire, lightning, and death
It spreads chaos with every breath
Not even Ragnarok could end its rage
Only seen as an endless slave
Abnormal Storms and Dreams
A storm howled outside as Kiana looked out her window. She wasn't what you'd call average in wealth but the way she dressed put it otherwise. The dark oak door creaked open as her father walked in, his broad stature nearly matching his style of clothing. Always wearing different suits, the one he wore at present, was navy blue with a grey tie and dark brown lace-up shoes. His black hair was neatly combed and his violet eyes reflected the light coming from her lamp. "Are you okay Kiana? You haven't left your room since the storm began" he asked. Kiana knew her father, she knew that she made him worry but strangely, today something was different.
The storm wasn't like any other and the lightning that cracked through the sky didn't give off the white glow that others had. Nor had the rain been so hard. She had been so determined to figure out what was wrong that she scarcely left her room. It was a tidy space with her queen bed in the centre of the wall and drawers lining two of the three windows that shone light into the room. Or at least they would have if there had been sunlight. Bluebells lined the windows outside, with the middle of the three windows jutting out more making room for a seating area where she would lay for hours on end, writing down notes and sketches of the storm.
"Sorry father, I'll get into more appropriate clothing." It was an excuse as much as it was the truth. Her father would scold her if she went out in the clothing she was currently in, so once he left the room she hastily changed into a blue dress, some slip-on shoes, and tied her dark purple hair back, out of her violet eyes. Kiana scurried out the door, down the stairs, turning left, through the first door, and into the dining room.
"It's nice to see you join us for dinner Kiana." She was dumbfounded. Necro (an old sage for the council) was sitting at the large oak table wearing his usual lab coat, grey thermal top, and mud brown pants with black leather shoes, and his grey hair covering parts of his silver eyes.
"What are you doing here Necro?" Necro smiled at the confusion in her voice, a simple gesture but Kiana knew better, the sage always liked to hide things in plain sight. Kiana sighed and thought of how to rephrase her words. "You're here to discuss the effects of the storm and its... abnormalities, aren't you?" Kiana stared at the sage as he nodded and pulled out a seat.
"How about you get your logbook and bring it down, I was told you hadn't left your room since the storm began and I suspect you have better knowledge than me with the view you have." Kiana's expression changed and excitement started radiating from her like heat from a furnace. In a matter of seconds she was in her room and grabbing for her logbook, notes and sketches filled the book, a simple thing her father had used to get her out and about had turned into quite the hobby, even Necro couldn't deny her work, it wasn't some small item either, It was filled with things about previous storms. She grabbed the book and bolted through the door of the dining room and into the seat Necro had pulled out for her. "I see you've been keeping track of the storm through its progression." He nodded at her logbook's page with a curious glance.
"This is just the recurring things, the main anomalies within the storm from the purple lightning to the red rain, not to mention the unusual direction of wind and jamming of magic and spells." Necro sat and listened as Kiana kept on explaining her notes to him. He also noticed the displeasure on Retro's face, the father didn't seem very happy with his daughter's knowledge of the storm.
"Kiana". Retro's voice was stern, clear and the girl stopped at the sound of her name. "If this is what you waste your time on instead of learning the information that Necro teaches you then why am I sending you to him." The tone in his voice said more than his words, he wasn't happy at all with her research and he wanted to make it clear, but the sage wouldn't let him.
"Retro, this information is very important. Not only for us but the rest of the land, we can't afford to lay and wait for the storm to clear." Retro stared at the sage but his attention was on Kiana. "Please continue Kiana, I would like to update my notes since the forest blocks most of my view." Kiana nodded and the sage watched the girl start to specify certain things about the storm and its effects. She flipped through the pages a little, stopping every few pages until she stopped at one with doodles of a dragon and a boy. "What is that?" Necro asked as Kiana went to turn the page.
"It's nothing, I just got sidetracked." Necro watched the girl smile but his expression was all it took for her to change her mind. "Fine... a few days before the storm I started having this weird dream but it doesn't mean anything right?" Both males heard the concern in her voice but didn't speak. "Please tell me it means nothing..."
"Kiana..." The girl looked at her father, nearly in tears. "There may be an explanation but you may not like it." Retro's face was expressionless as his gaze stayed on his daughter. "Are you sure you want to hear it?" Kiana pondered for a moment, thoughts shot through her head like lightning through the storm, then she nodded and her father sighed.
"It is written that long ago when dragons soared the sky a bond was formed at birth between a very powerful but unstable dragonborn and a human. The human and dragonborn became friends instantly and would take flight everyday to protect their kingdom... But as time went on, their friendship turned into a love that could never be broken. The human’s parents refused to accept the dragonborn's love for their daughter so they forced the girl into a marriage with the prince of the kingdom. The daughter was not so easily deterred and fought back, refusing to marry the prince since her heart belonged to the dragonborn and their offspring wouldn't be tainted by anyone else. She was sentenced to death and when the dragonborn went into town the next day, he was tied up and forced to watch the girl he loved be nailed to a cross and burned. The dragon was then forced into a ravine called 'The Devil's Gorge' but not before cursing the entire kingdom. The following days were known as 'The Fall Of Helheim' and not many know this but this is how 'The Unknown' was made." Kiana stared at him, no shock, no fear, not even a bit of concern... just a smile, an empty smile.
"So it's true then?" Necro stared wide-eyed at the girl. "Every ‘dream’ was the same...but not." Retro and Necro stared at Kiana with a confused look. "I'd wake up on the forest floor, sit up and see a boy with two dark blue wings and a tail. His clothes are messy and torn, his soaked purple hair covers parts of his face and over his shoulders. Two curly horns rose from his head and his eyes, the left an electric blue and the right a crimson red. Lightning and fire crackled and flared in his eyes. At first we thought we were both parts of our imagination but as time went on, we realized the other was real.'' Kiana sighed and leaned back in the chair.
"You want to see him... don't you?" Kiana popped back up and stared at Necro and Retro. "It's clear that as time progresses you will do it with, or without, your father's permission. Even he can't stop it, neither can I, but we can prepare you." Retro looked at the sage, a look of shock and annoyance shown on his face. "I will NOT send my daughter out in this weather, no way, no how, Necro, you know the dangers that dwell in the forest during these storms." Retro stared the sage down but Necro waved him off.
"It'll only get worse if they are not united, a dragonborn like this without its rider will cause a lot of damage, and nothing but the rider can stop it." Necro responded as he went to the door "you know the damage that'll be dealt, you were there before just like I was, but I was an idiot to let that happen and I refuse to let it happen again." And just like that Necro left the mansion and went on his way leaving Kiana and Retro to ponder on his words.
